World’s Largest Rodent

Capybaras are the world’s largest rodents and can be found in many parts of South America. They weigh up to 150 pounds, and typically live in family groups of ten to twenty individuals. Capybaras live a semi-aquatic life near rivers, ponds, lakes and marshy areas. While visiting friends in Uberlandia, Brazil, we saw several of these cuddly creatures.  Catrell tried to figure out how she could bring one or two home with us.  Seeing that [...]

South America

South America, the Adventure Ends? Machu Picchu This article is a recap of our journey through South America, and although the two regions are similar they are also vastly different.   Where do I begin? For starters, the cultural experience seemed a bit more gritty in Central America than South America.  Granted, we did visit the more developed countries of South America, but in Central America, it seemed we had stepped back in time.  Depending on [...]

Uberlandia, Brazil, a Bittersweet Reunion

After two weeks in Florianopolis, Brazil, it was time to move on.  The owner of the guesthouse was almost as disappointed for us to leave as we were.  He was the perfect landlord and had adopted us as his family.  Kim had left a week earlier and was replaced by a Dutchman traveling by himself.  He was physically one of the largest and tallest people we had ever met and a very nice guy, but [...]

Florianopolis and Barra da Lagos, Brazil

Florianopolis and Barra da Lagos, a Perfect Combination Florianopolis was a large city about an hour’s bus ride from Barra da Lagos, which was located on the east coast of the island.  There were many other small towns and villages; however, just as Alejandro had promised it was the prefect place for us.  It was a quaint seaside fishing village that was also frequented by tourists.  Most of the other towns on the island seemed [...]

Welcome to Brazil, World’s Friendliest People

Barra da Lagos We arrived in Porto Alegre and disembarked at a huge multi-level bus terminal.  It was 8:30 p.m., very dark outside, and once again we had no place to stay.  All the hotels across from the bus station appeared high-end and out of our price range.  However, none of us were looking forward to locating a cheaper hotel in the dark in an unfamiliar city where we could not speak the language.  Every [...]

Brazil

Welcome to Brazil, We Survived Another Bus Ride Sleepy bus driver? With the border crossing from hell in the bus’s side mirrors, we bid Chuy/Chui a not-so-fond farewell.  Although the two towns did many things right, the immigrations process was something that sorely needed to be improved.  Unlike every other border crossing, the bus driver went whizzing past the customs facility, which apparently was only used by individuals driving cars or truck drivers.  Anyone riding [...]
